Tip 1: Communicate with the Lead Teacher
In order to make your experience as a community educator a smooth ride, there are a few communication questions that will be helpful to discuss during your first meeting with the lead teacher. Before your first official day, set up a time to meet with your lead teacher to review expectations. Here are a few things that would be helpful to review:
- Establish a clear schedule for your volunteer hours. Stick to the schedule and don’t be late.
- Preferred communication for both the lead teacher and CE? (text, phone, email)
- What is the process for notifying the lead teacher if there is an emergency or illness on a day in which you are scheduled to work with students?
- How does the lead teacher want to be notified regarding concerns about students?
- How should you document concerns about students?
